Loophole in hospital observation stays is being addressed

A Medicare loophole causes major financial ramifications to patients who are in the hospital for “observation” lasting over 24 hours.  If not formally admitted as an inpatient, hospital and subsequent nursing home costs can be considered out-of-pocket for the patient.  However, now a law will require that patients in this situation be warned by hospitals of the potential costs.
