End-of-Life is not just the actual act of dying but the important issues surrounding it. End-of-life care is the term used to describe the support and medical care given during the time surrounding death.   End-of-life decisions are vast and among other considerations may likely include where the person will die, what type of medical care will be administered and how emotional needs will be met.

Some people choose to receive medical treatment up until the end of life.  They have different issues than someone who prefers Hospice.

Hospice focuses on palliative/comfort care rather than medical improvement or cure.  It is a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach which aims to support the emotional and spiritual aspects of the person as well as his/her family.  Medical treatment is meant to treat symptoms and increase comfort and quality of life.  It can be provided within a private home or as part of a nursing facility or stand alone facility (see Skilled Nursing/Nursing Home resources).

Funeral arrangements, burial vs cremation and other considerations must also be made regarding end of life.
