Adult day care is an effective option for caregiver respite as well as socialization for its participants. Though some providers offer non-traditional hours of operation, most are available during business hours and provide basic care to participants.
Adult day care typically provides socialization and activity programs in addition to general supervision and often includes meal programs as well. There are also day care centers that specialize in providing medical care and others in offering care focused only on those with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Some programs operate independently while many are affiliated/housed within nursing homes, medical centers and other senior adult agencies. According to statistics, about 50 percent of the individuals participating in an adult day care program have some type of cognitive impairment and over half require assistance with at least two daily living activities.
